Creating an Academic Plan

The ICS undergraduate counselors and advising staff help students set goals, select courses, and explore resources related to ICS undergraduate academic programs. This page gives step-by-step instructions on how to create an academic plan.

Step 1: Watch the Academic Planning Workshop for step-by-step instructions

Step 2: Use your toolbox: DegreeWorks, UCI Catalogue, Degree Sheets

Open DegreeWorks through your Student Access. Degreeworks is used to check your progress towards completing your degree. Degreeworks is split into three sections: University Requirements, General Education Requirements, Major Requirements.

Please refer to the DegreeWorks Legend below:

STEP 1: Use the Academic Planning Worksheet or an online spreadsheet to save and update your progress.

STEP 2: Start by adding all Major Requirements to your plan.

  1. Use DegreeSheets to ensure you include all required courses in your plan. Please note that DegreeSheets are only for major requirements and not for all degree requirements like GEs
  2. For information on major requirements and course prerequisites (and optionally, Specializations)
    – Go to the UCI Catalogue
    – Click on your Major
    – Under the “Requirements” tab, click “Requirements for the B.S. in [degree name]”
  3. Check the ICS Course Offerings Page to see when classes are scheduled to be offered (fall, winter, spring).
    – To check when courses have been offered in the past, use Course Enrollment History/Statistics. This is helpful for when you are planning for quarters beyond what is listed on the Course Offerings page
    For BIM and CSE students:
    – CSE students can use the Engineering Teaching Plan for CSE and EECS course offerings.
BIM students can use the Business Teaching Plan (under Academic Success Tools) for MGMT course offerings. For questions about MGMT offerings, please contact the School of Business.

STEP 3: Refer to your DegreeWorks and add remaining University Requirements and General Education (GE) Requirements to your plan.

– Note, some Major Requirements also fulfill GE requirements.

Step 3: Submit your plan for review

Want to get your plan reviewed? Please submit the form here. Plans take about 2-4 weeks to be reviewed and you will be emailed once your plan is reviewed.
